One of the best artists in Norway came to Kyoto with his wife to open his exhibition at Shibunkaku gallery on Feb.14. We became friends when we were posted in Norway and it was a good opportunity to meet agan each other after over 9 years interval. We were very happy to make it. They looked the same as they used to, although Jarle looked a bit tired because of his jet-lag problem. His art works, linoleum cut printing were colored in such bright, even divine tints and shades that we felt very pure and genuine. The colors of his works are always very impressive. There were five new peices related to the Tsunami in Tohoku and this exhibition itself is partly for its charity. There were quite a few guests, some of them were from out of Kyoto like us. Mr. Kida, a great artist of wood cut printing and glass painting, a person of distinguished service in Culture for Kyoto city was present to show his frindship with Jarle Rosseland by displaying a few of his art works together. The reception was very successful.
The next day we took them out to show them a precious place, Memorial Museum of Kanjiro Kawai, a famous ceramist, which we already visited this afternoon before joining the opening reception. My friend, Hiroko-san and her husand kindly introduced us to the successor of Kanjirou at lunch time and they took us to the Museum which is very much impressive. So we wanted to introduce this museum to Jarle and Signe as well. They admired the display of the ceramics in beautiful colors and shapes of course and the private quarter in such a traditional Japanese style house where this ceramist used to live. The house is about seventy years old but still in good condition and beautiful. The huge kiln consisting of eight faunaces along the slope in the backyard was very interesting with a Shinto altar decoration to protect the work inside of the kiln. We ended up with another visit to the house of the successor, Mr.Toru Kawai, to appreciate a bowl of Japanese powdered tea kindly served by his wife.
