ソチオリンピックが毎日感動を与えてくれて寝不足が続いている。羽生選手が期待通りに金を獲得しただけでも感動したが、彼の感想の弁を聞いて一層胸が熱くなった。生まれてきてここまで生誕の地を愛し、彼を取り巻く人々と環境、すべてに感謝し続けている姿勢をまざまざと見て、１９歳にしてこの人としての完成度に感動して涙が出た。
February 15 early in the morning
I have had only a few hours to sleep these days due to Sochi Olympic which has transfered lots of excitements to Japan. As expected Mr.Hanyu got the gold medal and everybody was so happy and excited. On top of that I was very much moved to tears at the words he gave to interviewers upon his winning. He is always appreciative to his native town and the people there for what he is now. His thanks never miss going to the people in his native town and its surrounding that have supported him through his difficulties. His native town is Sendai in Tohoku, one of the areas awfully attacked by the great earthquake in March 11'11. He is only 19 years old but his mentality has a maturity as a human.
テレビ観戦している間に外は大変な世界と化していた。大雪第二弾の到来である。銀世界が美しいどころか、恐怖心を齎すほどの攻めの降り方が続き、庭も歩道も車道も大きな綿袋が敷き詰められた状態に。その内、ついに停電という事態になってしまった。家の前の県道沿いの倒木が原因で送電線が遮断されてしまったのである。電気に頼っている者の無能さを自覚。一方で、電力会社の迅速な対応に助けられて４時間後には文明の利器は息を吹き返すことが出来た。やはり日本の素晴らしさもここで再認識。アメリカ人の親友が２年前にやはり東海岸が大変なノーストームに見舞われた時、３日間電気がアウトだったという。スケールは異なるかもしれないが、日本人のこうした復旧活動の迅速さは凄いと思う。
The scenery out has been changed while we were involved in watching TV through night. It has been snowing since last night and still it is. This is the second snow storm, much heavier than the first one.This time snow looked awful and fearful unlike the firs one which I enjoyed because of its pure white and beautiful view. Everything was covered with thick chushion and kept us away from it. Eventually we got a black-out. We had no power for 4 hours. Two workmen from Power Company came to find out that it was caused by trees fallen by heavy snow. They were deligent enough to respond to our need and worked hard under such bad weather to put it back to normal as quickly as possible. Here again I'm proud of Japanese workman's spirit to respond to fulfill our needs.

2月16日未明
ソチから感動の波第二弾が届いた。葛西紀明レージェンドの快挙である。偶然にも彼が初めてオリンピックに出場したのは１９歳の時。今回の羽生選手は初出場で１９歳。葛西選手は７回目のオリンピックで初めてメダルを獲得した。。彼のメダルへの執念がモティベーションになっていたという。七転び八起きの凄さを目の前に見て、１３年前、私達がノルウェーに着任して１か月後に、ホルメンコーレンジャンプ大会に参加した日本からのスキージャンパーを公邸にお迎えしたことを想い出した。あの時、葛西選手に会っているが故に、喜びは一入である。本当におめでとうございます。あの時、咄嗟にシドニーオリンピックのロゴ入りの新しいテニスウエアの背にサインをして貰ったことが想い出され、探し出して今それを写真に撮った次第。

The second excitement was emitted from Sochi. It's Mr.Kasai's great success. He is now 41 years old and he got the silver medal for the first time after 7 challenges in Winter Olympic Games. He was only 19 years old, just as old as Mr.Hanyu who is the gold medalist in men's figure skating this time, when he participated for the first time in Olympic. His strong desire to capture a gold medal has motivated him since his first challenge. His most happy face reminds us of the time when we welcomed the Japanese team of ski jumpers back in 2001 in March, already 13 years ago. They were for Holmenkolen Ski Jump competition. It was just one month after we arrived in Oslo to be assigned for the Japanese Embassy.
I have met with Mr. Kasai then, therefore we are most happy to see him in great success. Congratulations! At that time I was lucky to ask them to autograph their names on the back of a T shirt which I have kept wherever we have been up until now. I took a photo of the shirt for this blog.
